Walking the Block:Christopher St. NYC

Today we went up to the B. Hollyman Gallery on 6th St to see this photo exhibit by Jo Ann Santangelo.  She shot a particular block (very west on Christopher St) that is populated by an African American LBGT population.  This is a neighborhood and block that I have walked on hundreds of times since my adolescence.  I don't know if it's my proprietorship of NYC but I always find that non-New Yorkers have a different eye when viewing NY.  And that is the way it should be.  Perhaps because of my work as a social worker there  for 35+ years I find that any romanticism of street life there misses the pain that comes with it.  These black and white photos were edgy and harsh.  They made me sad.
